Urine examination or Mutra Pariksha is one of the 8 types of ancient Ayurvedic diagnosis methods that gives information regarding formation and prognosis of diseases of body systems, by observing the abnormalities in urine.

An adult produces about 1 liter of urine daily. Urine removes water, salt and mineral wastes from the body. Urinary system helps maintaining the normal concentration of electrolytes within the body fluids.

Urine Diagnosis (Mutra Pariksha)

A straw color of urine is normal.
Yellow or reddish color indicates increased Pitta dosha aggravation or dehydration. Urine clear like water indicates Kapha dosha aggravation or over hydration.
Brownish color indicates a Vata dosha disorders, dark yellow Pitta disorders and cloudy color Kapha disorders. However, urine color can be affected by diet or supplements.
Red colored urine indicates blood disorders or beetroot consumption.
Sweet smelling urine can indicate diabetes or some other Kapha disease. In the past, diabetes was detected by putting a jar with urine outside. If urine attracted ants it was a sign of high blood sugar. Acidic smelling urine with burning sensation indicates excess Pitta.
Bitter odor and bubbly urine indicates excess Vata. Urine with foul odor indicates ama. Scanty urine indicates water retention. This increases the blood pressure.

Increased urine elimination can indicate: bladder dysfunctions, diabetes and urinary tract infections.
Decreased urine elimination can indicate: kidney stones, increased thirst, dry mouth, heavy colored urine, lower abdominal pain and edema. Diuretics, drugs and excessive sex can damage urine elimination.

Oil Drop Test (Taila Bindu Pariksha)

Taila bindu pariksha or oil drop test is a part of urine examination.

One hour before sunrise patient's urine is collected in oval shaped earthen pot or glass jar. One drop of sesame oil is dropped on the surface of urine. The patterns and the oil drop distribution determine the diagnosis. If the oil drop spreads quickly over the surface of urine it indicates that disease is curable and easy to heal. If it doesn't spread and remains at the same spot it indicates that disease it difficult to treat. If the oil drop sinks to the middle of jar and then spreads it also indicates that disease is difficult to treat. If the oil drop sinks at the bottom of jar disease is considered incurable. If the oil drop spreads in the shape of snake it indicated Vata disorders. Umbrella shape indicates Pitta disorders and shape of pearls indicates Kapha disorders.

The description of urine diagnosis can be found in classical literature of Ayurveda like Vangasena Samhita, Basavarajeeyam and Yogaratnakara.
